How to Choose the Right Clamshell Heat Press


1. Identify the material and transfer process

Start with the item being pressed and the transfer method. Tell the supplier whether you use sublimation paper, heat-transfer vinyl, DTF film or another system.

The machine must be evaluated together with the required temperature, pressing time and pressure. A model should not be selected from the product name alone.

2. Measure the required transfer area

Choose a platen that can cover the artwork and the flat pressing area of the item. Do not select a machine based only on the overall size of the garment or product.

The 380 × 380 mm format may suit smaller graphics. The 400 × 500 mm and 400 × 600 mm formats provide more space for larger artwork and longer pieces.

3. Consider the loading method

A standard clamshell machine opens vertically and can require less surrounding movement than a swing-away structure.

A swing-away model gives the operator more open access to the lower platen, but it also needs sufficient side clearance. A pull-out lower platen can make item positioning more accessible.

4. Evaluate the production workflow

For occasional work, samples or shorter runs, a manual clamshell configuration may provide the required workflow.

For repeated loading and pressing, a double-station model allows one item to be prepared while the other station is in use. Actual output still depends on the operator, transfer cycle, item preparation and production layout.

5. Check the substrate thickness

Garments and thin cut pieces have different loading requirements from thicker flat products. Provide the material type and approximate thickness so the platen clearance and pressure arrangement can be checked.
